Amy Schumer has criticised animated films for depicting mothers with exaggerated, sexualised appearances
Amy Schumer has questioned why mothers in animated films are often portrayed with sexualised appearances, arguing that female characters are frequently designed to look much younger than their children.
The comedian, 45, shared her criticism through Instagram Stories on Friday, November 6, alongside footage of a mother character from the 2017 animated film The Son of Bigfoot.
“Why do moms in animations have to look like porn stars and the same age as their kids?” Schumer wrote. She also questioned whether giving a character a short haircut was enough to distinguish her as a mother, adding, “Slightly short haircut = mom?”
The directing duo Karni and Saul subsequently shared Schumer’s post on their joint Instagram account, agreeing with her comments.
“Couldn’t agree more,” they wrote in a post on Saturday, November 7. “Because men design and direct them. The short answer. Get women in here, and it all changes.”
Schumer reposted their response to her own Stories. The discussion comes from the comedian’s experience as a mother to her son, Gene, whom she welcomed in 2019 with her former husband, Chris Fischer.
In a December 2019 appearance on the Informed Pregnancy and Parenting podcast, Schumer discussed the difficulties of giving birth through a Caesarean section.
“I was throwing up through the first hour of my C-section,” she recalled, explaining that the procedure lasted more than three hours because of her endometriosis.
Schumer and Fischer announced their separation in December 2025 after seven years of marriage. In her statement, she said they would continue to prioritise raising their son together. She filed for divorce in January, with proceedings finalised in October 2026.
