The Social Reckoning is expected to have a disappointing box-office debut similar to Tom Cruise‘s Digger. But there is a major catch when it comes to the financial consequences of both movies: their production budgets differ.
According to Deadline, early reviews suggest The Social Reckoning is expected to open with a mid-single-digit gross at 2,200 theaters. This would put the movie in a similar box-office range to Digger, which opened to around $8 million domestically despite its star power and large production cost. If these numbers hold, the Jeremy Strong movie could face the same box-office fate as Tom Cruise’s.
However, a significant catch comes from the production differences between the two movies. The Social Reckoning reportedly had a $30-42 million budget before global prints and advertising costs. Digger, by contrast, reportedly had a $160 million production budget.
Moreover, Alcon also co-financed the Social Network sequel, giving the project a financial structure Digger lacked. So, even if the box-office numbers look similarly disappointing, the financial damage could be very different.
What is The Social Reckoning about?
Aaron Sorkin wrote and directed The Social Reckoning. It serves as a sequel to the 2010 movie The Social Network. Unlike the first film, the upcoming movie features Facebook as an already established social media giant.
The premise follows Frances Haugen, a young Facebook engineer, who enlisted the help of Jeff Horwitz, a Wall Street Journal reporter, to blow the whistle on the social network’s most guarded secrets. Haugen’s decision to disclose internal data became the basis of The Wall Street Journal’s Facebook Files.
In the upcoming sequel, Jeremy Strong stars as an older Mark Zuckerberg. It also features Mikey Madison, Jeremy Allen White, Wunmi Mosaku, Betty Gilpin, Billy Magnussen, and Bill Burr.
As of this article, The Social Reckoning holds a 63% Tomatometer score from 70 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. Check out ComingSoon’s review here.
The Social Reckoning will hit theaters on October 9, 2026.
