You don’t have to wait until December to return to the Wizarding World. Ahead of HBO Max’s new television reboot, a brand-new Harry Potter book just hit bookstores today.

Ever since 2001, the Harry Potter movies starring Daniel Radcliffe have been the de facto live-action interpretation of J.K. Rowling’s world-famous book series. All that is about to change, as HBO Max prepares to unveil its new Harry Potter television show on December 25. The series stars Dominic McLaughlin in the titular role and promises to be a more faithful adaptation than the movies could ever have been, dedicating a full season of television to each of Rowling’s seven books.

In conjunction with Season 1’s upcoming debut, Wizarding World Direct reports that a new television tie-in edition of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone is officially available for purchase. The book features a brand-new cover, an image of McLaughlin’s Harry Potter facing away from the camera, sporting his red-and-yellow Hogwarts Quidditch uniform and walking gingerly through the snow.

The text of The Philosopher’s Stone remains untouched in this new paperback edition of the acclaimed fantasy novel. The only difference is the brand-new cover, which also sports a sticker advertising the new HBO original series. The English-language version of the new collectible was released on November 3. A rollout for international markets is planned for a later date.

The Harry Potter Series Could Be Better Than the Movies

While plenty of fans are upset about HBO rebooting Harry Potter so soon, they miss the incredible opportunity that the new series presents for the franchise. The Harry Potter films are terrific adaptations, but they could only go so far. With only about two hours to adapt each book (four for the two-part Deathly Hallows adaptation), the movies could never adequately portray the full size and scope of J.K. Rowling’s books. The show has no such limitations.

HBO’s Harry Potter consists of eight hour-long episodes per season, giving the show more than three times the screen time of each movie. This means that the show will have time to explore more subplots and side characters who never appear in the movies. Already, iconic characters cut from the films, including Peeves the Poltergeist, are confirmed to show up in the television reboot after being axed by the film adaptations.

The show also has the benefit of appealing to a different audience than the movies. Many of those upset about the reboot are those who grew up with the movies. For them, the show will never replace the original adaptation–but it doesn’t have to. Like the movies before it, HBO’s Harry Potter aims to appeal to a younger generation of fans who can grow up alongside its characters. These are fans who may not have seen the movies, or who don’t yet have a nostalgic attachment to them.

If HBO’s reboot can appeal to these Harry Potter fans, then it will take its place alongside the film franchise as an all-time great book-to-screen adaptation. Thanks to its expanded format, the show may even surpass the movies in terms of popularity over time. But that remains to be seen.

The new edition of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone is now available for purchase. Harry Potter Season 1 premieres on December 25, 2026, exclusively on HBO and HBO Max.
