Section 31 Movie Starring Michelle Yeoh Gets Premiere Date On Paramount+

The long-awaited Star Trek: Section 31 film finally has a release date on Paramount+. The film will follow Emperor Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh) as she is invited to join Starfleet’s secret black-ops division, Section 31. Star Trek: Section 31 will be directed by longtime Star Trek: Discovery director Olatunde Osunsanmi and will also star Omar Hendrick, Sam Richardson, James Hiroyuki Liao, and Robert Kazinsky. Aside from Star Trek: Discovery, the film will have ties to the wider Star Trek franchise as Kacey Rohl will play Rachel Garrett, the future captain of the USS Enterprise-C from Star Trek: The Next Generation.

At New York Comic-Con, via Deadline, it was announced that Star Trek: Section 31 will debut on Paramount+ on Friday, January 24, 2025. The film will be streaming on Paramount+ in the United States and all international markets where the streaming service is available. Star Trek: Section 31 will be the first non-theatrically released Star Trek film in the franchise’s history.

Star Trek: Section 31 has had a long road to development. The project was originally announced in 2019 as a television spin-off of Star Trek: Discovery, focusing on Yeoh’s Phillipa Georgiou. Production was set to begin in May 2020 before being delayed and eventually canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Since then, Michelle Yeoh won an Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in Everything Everywhere All At Once. Paramount+ announced in April 2023, one month after Yeoh won her Academy Award, that Star Trek: Section 31 would be retooled from a television series into a streaming film.

Boldly Debuting a Star Trek Film on Streaming

Despite not getting a theatrical release, Star Trek: Section 31 will mark the first Star Trek film in nine years since the release of Star Trek Beyond back in July 2016. For nearly a decade, Paramount has struggled to get Star Trek 4 off the ground, having gone through multiple drafts and incarnations of the projects that have continued the Kelvin timeline characters while others broke away from it. Despite announcing the returning cast of the Star Trek reboot franchise back in 2022, no progress has been made on the next theatrically released Star Trek film.

The latest Star Trek series was renewed for Season 2 before Season 1 aired and She-Hulk star Tatiana Maslany will have a recurring role in the series.

Star Trek: Section 31 will debut one month after Star Trek: Lower Decks concludes its five-season run at the end of December 2024. The next season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will likely debut in the summer of 2025, as the previous two seasons did, allowing Section 31 to fill the Star Trek gap in Paramount+’s schedule. While Star Trek: Section 31 will be Star Trek‘s first streaming film, as Paramount shifted previously planned streaming films like Smile and Mean Girls to theatrical, one wonders if this will also be the last in the franchise’s history.
