Brad Pitt is quietly dominating the box office with a passion project that finally hit theaters after spending almost nine years in development. While it’s only making a fraction compared to his all-time highest-grossing film, it’s still succeeding on its own merits. In fact, it has made enough money to outperform a definitive modern action classic.
Pitt has long cemented his reputation as a bankable actor, with a string of blockbusters to his credit. F1 ranks first with a $634 million worldwide take, followed by World War Z ($540 million), Troy ($494 million), Mr. & Mrs. Smith ($487 million), and Ocean’s Eleven ($450 million), and that’s just his top five commercial hits. His new survival drama, Heart of the Beast, does not even crack the top 20 list. That doesn’t diminish its success, as it has now outperformed Digger, Primetime, and Practical Magic 2. Apples-to-apples, Heart of the Beast‘s total gross has also well surpassed the first John Wick‘s.
‘Heart of the Beast’ Beats Keanu Reeves’ Revenge Thriller
With $133 million hauled globally, Heart of the Beast has officially beaten John Wick‘s $86 million lifetime earnings. Both were massive gambles for their respective studios coming out of the gate, but Paramount backed Pitt’s film despite its ballooning budget. By comparison, the odds were really stacked against John Wick. Major Hollywood studios rejected the script before it landed at Lionsgate, and the entire production was nearly shut down if not for a last-minute financial save.
Heart of the Beast may have officially outgrossed John Wick, but their production costs offer a different perspective. John Wick was an indie production helmed by first-time directors Chad Stahelski and David Leitch, who both put their own money into the film’s $20 million budget. Lead star Keanu Reeves also contributed, in addition to taking a pay cut, and producer Basil Iwanyk maxed out personal credit cards to keep the production afloat. Actress Eva Longoria helped the project during the homestretch with a $6 million investment. The risk paid off, and John Wick earned more than four times its budget, spawning a billion-dollar franchise that has so far yielded one spinoff and three sequels.
Brad Pitt’s Gritty Survival Drama Faces a Major Hurdle at the Box Office
In contrast, David Ayer’s Heart of the Beast is a collaborative effort among multiple production partners, spearheaded by Paramount Pictures, which bolstered the $82 million budget. The film has yet to recoup that, despite showing strong legs at the box office, with the bulk of its earnings coming from the international market. However, its commercial success ultimately depends on whether it turns a profit, and it’s still far from the break-even point, even after spending more than three weeks in theaters.
It’s still unclear whether Heart of the Beast will stand the test of time or eventually rank among Pitt’s best work. Even so, critics are already hailing his performance, and the film has garnered a solid 94% audience approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Speaking with Collider, Pitt confirmed Heart of the Beast was physically the hardest movie he had ever made, but he soldiered on because of the compelling script, which centers on the immutable bond between a man and his dog — a premise also central to the original John Wick.
