UNITED NATIONS, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) — The Security Council on Wednesday adopted a resolution to renew the sanctions regime on Haiti for another year.

Resolution 2831 extends the sanctions regime, which includes an arms embargo, travel ban and assets freeze measures, for one year from the date of the adoption of the resolution.

It reaffirms the Security Council’s decision that UN member states shall take appropriate steps to prevent the illicit trafficking and diversion of arms and related materiel in Haiti.

The resolution calls on member states that transfer firearms, ammunition and related materiel to relevant Haitian authorities, either by sale or donation, to support those authorities in strengthening physical security, stockpile management, and post-delivery controls to mitigate the risk of diversion.

It calls on the Haitian authorities to strengthen their weapons and ammunition management and to reinforce border and customs controls.

In addition, it confirms that the multinational Gang Suppression Force (GSF) in Haiti should support the Haitian National Police and the Haitian armed forces to record and dispose of illicit arms, ammunition and other materiel, seized as part of offensive operations or in the course of carrying out its mandate.

It further calls on the GSF to report any diversion of weapons and ammunition, including through loss and theft, to the Panel of Experts that assists the Sanctions Committee.

The resolution also extends the mandate of the Panel of Experts for a period of 13 months from its date of adoption.

It requests the panel to provide an interim report to the Security Council by March 28, 2027, and a final report no later than Sept. 1, 2027.

Resolution 2831 was adopted with 14 votes in favor among the 15 Security Council members. Russia abstained.

The Security Council introduced sanctions against Haiti in October 2022.  ■
