I was first introduced to Wegmans when I was in college. It was further away than the smaller grocery stores near campus, so I was initially hesitant to try it out. But my friends kept saying that Wegmans was more than a grocery store. The second I set foot inside the Chapel Hill Wegmans, I was sold. I immediately fangirled over the expansive prepared food section (shoutout to the cannoli dip), the seemingly endless aisles of pantry staples, and the fully operational model train running above the dairy department.
That love for the grocery chain has not dwindled over the years. Now that I’m in New York City, there is a Wegmans a 10-minute walk from my office. So you could say that I keep up with what’s new there. And this month only, you can get its most popular bakery cake for just $20. Here’s what you need to know.
What You Should Know About Wegmans’ Ultimate Chocolate Cake
To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Wegmans’ Ultimate Chocolate Cake, the chain is offering a special anniversary price of just $20 for the 48-ounce round layer cake. Cakes of the same size currently retail around $34. This discount will last all of October at all Wegmans locations.
This is the bakery’s most popular cake. The cake itself is described as an “intense dark chocolate flavor” with an “ultimate” chocolate frosting. You can also buy a smaller 15-ounce cake for $15 and 5-ounce individual slices for $7.
The ultimate chocolate cake has been a fan-favorite for the past two decades, and it actually started as an employee-developed recipe. Don’t just take our word for it: Kylie Kelce, a media personality and former field hockey player who is married to former Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce, mentioned in a podcast clip that in her college years, she used to pick up an entire Wegmans chocolate cake just for herself. Of course she would offer some to her friends, but the plan was always to stick her fork right into the cake and enjoy. Now you can too, but for less.

My Honest Review of Wegmans’ Ultimate Chocolate Cake
This grocery store cake made me rethink everything I know about grocery store cake. I’m used to the sheet cakes smothered in thick, oily frosting and a colorful “Happy Birthday” written on the front. Of course there’s a time and place for these cakes, but Wegmans’ chocolate cake tasted as if it came from my favorite high-end bakery.

What really did the trick was letting the cake come to room temperature, just as the label suggests. That allows the frosting to soften. I couldn’t believe how fluffy and light the cake was. The best way to describe it is that word everyone hates to hear: moist. I think the chocolate flavor was very pronounced in the icing, but a little more tame in the cake itself. That definitely helped the dessert from becoming too rich, which is a fine line in double chocolate cake land.
The cake’s listing online states, “This cake will have you craving ice-cold milk.” This couldn’t be more true. Because the cake is so chocolaty and decadent, you might need a little something to wash it down. A cold glass of milk, scoop of vanilla ice cream, or cup of coffee all work just fine. This is such a great deal for such a great cake, so you should definitely take advantage of it before the month’s over.
